Kim Ji-won (Korean: 김지원; born October 19, 1992) is a South Korean actress. She gained recognition through her roles in television series The Heirs (2013) and Descendants of the Sun (2016), before taking on leading roles in Fight for My Way (2017), Arthdal Chronicles (2019), Lovestruck in the City (2020–2021), My Liberation Notes (2022), and Queen of Tears (2024). The success of Kim's television series internationally has established her as a top Hallyu star.[2][3]

Early life and education

Kim Ji-won was born on October 19, 1992, in Geumcheon District, Seoul, South Korea, and has an elder sister two years older than her. In 2007, while still a teenager, she was scouted on the street and signed with an entertainment agency. She subsequently became a trainee for over three years while preparing for her debut. During her first year of junior high school, she spent six months to a year studying in Chicago, Illinois, United States, where her maternal relatives lived. After finally entering the industry in 2010, she continued her education by enrolling at Dongguk University's Department of Theater in 2011.[4]

Career

2008–2012: Beginnings

Kim was trained in singing, dancing, and acting, but eventually chose to pursue the latter.[5] She was a background vocalist for the singer Younha, performing as a keyboardist and background vocalist in various performances as well as appearing in Younha's music video "Gossip Boy" in 2008. During this time there were plans for her to debut as a singer under the stage name "JessicaK".[6] Prior to her official debut, Kim made an appearance in the drama Mrs. Saigon. Kim then officially entered the industry in 2010 in a commercial for LG Cyon's Lollipop 2 featuring the group Big Bang and thus became known as the "Lollipop Girl".[7] She later appeared in a carbonated drink commercial in which she performed a song and dance number and became known as the "Oran C Girl".[7][8] She was also called Little Kim Tae-hee due to her resemblance to the actress.[9][10]

Kim's first role after her debut was the romance omnibus film Romantic Heaven.[5] However, she first gained attention as an actress after starring in the 2011 sitcom High Kick: Revenge of the Short Legged.[11] She then appeared in the musical drama What's Up.[12] Kim then starred in the high school drama To the Beautiful You[13][14] and headlined the horror film Horror Stories, playing a kidnapped high school student.[15] Kim also appeared in Baek Seung Heon's debut music video "Till the Sun Rises" alongside JYJ's Kim Jae-joong.[16]

2013–2016: Rising popularity and breakthrough

In 2013, Kim starred as one of the lead roles in the KBS Drama special Waiting for Love, about how four different youths with different views towards love start seeing each other,[17][18] as well as the film Horror Stories 2, the sequel to the previous Horror Stories film, playing a student obsessed with black magic. The same year, Kim co-starred in teen drama The Heirs, in which she played a chic and haughty heiress.[19][20] The Kim Eun-sook-penned drama was viewed over one billion times on Youku and its popularity raised Kim's profile,[21] winning her the New Star Award at the SBS Drama Awards.[22]

In 2014, Kim starred in the crime thriller Gap-dong as a high school student and webtoon artist.[23] The same year, she played a supporting role in the KBS Drama special The Reason I'm Getting Married.[24] In December 2014, Kim signed an exclusive contract with King Kong Entertainment.[25]

In 2015, Kim starred alongside So Ji-sub in the romance web series One Sunny Day.[26] Later that year, Kim made a cameo appearance in tvN drama Hidden Identity as Kim Bum's girlfriend.[27]

In 2016, Kim co-starred in another project written by Kim Eun-sook, KBS2's military romance drama Descendants of the Sun, playing an army surgeon.[28] The drama was a pan-Asia hit with ratings peaking at 38.8% and winning the Grand Prize in television at the 52ndBaeksang Arts Awards as well being declared the Most Popular Show of the year by Korea Broadcasting Advertising Corporation.[29] Its success brought Kim further recognition outside Korea.[30][31][32] She hosted the year end KBS Drama Awards with Park Bo-gum and Jun Hyun-moo, where she won the Excellence Award.[33][34] Kim also won the Best Supporting Actress award at the APAN Star Awards.[35]

2017–present: Leading roles

In 2017, Kim was cast in her first leading role in KBS2's romance comedy drama, Fight for My Way, alongside Park Seo-joon; as a department store information desk employee who dreams of becoming an announcer.[36][37] The series was noted for its realistic portrayal of struggling youths, friendship, and love, and closed with ratings of 13.8%, solidifying Kim's status as a leading actress.[38][39] Kim once again won the Excellence Award at the KBS Drama Awards.[40]

In 2018, she starred in her first period role in the third installment of the Detective K film series, Detective K: Secret of the Living Dead. She played the role of a mysterious woman who loses her memory and takes part in the investigation.[41] That same year, Kim, along with her Descendants of the Sun co-star, Jin Goo, made a cameo appearance in the historical drama Mr.Sunshine by Kim Eun-sook.[42]

In 2019, Kim played the role of Tanya, who is the head of the Wahan tribe and Song Joong-ki's love interest in the historical fantasy drama Arthdal Chronicles.[43][44] The drama served as a reunion project for Song and Kim, who both starred in the 2016 hit drama Descendants of the Sun.[45] Although the series received mixed reviews, criticism for its similarities to other programs,[46][47] and lower-than-expected ratings,[48][49] it was renewed for a second season.[50] Kim and Song, however, did not reprise their roles for the second season.[51][52]

In February 2020, Kim signed with Salt Entertainment.[53][54] Later that year, she starred in the web series Lovestruck in the City opposite Ji Chang-wook which premiered on Kakao TV in December 2020.[55]

In April 2022, she starred in the television series My Liberation Notes, where she played an introverted employee struggling to escape from her monotonous life.[56] During its run, the series received modest but steadily-increasing ratings[57] and drew attention for its writing and relatable scenarios.[58][59] Kim earned a Baeksang nomination for her performance in the series.[60]

In June 2022, Kim's contract with Salt Entertainment ended, but she decided not to renew.[61] On September 29, 2022, Kim signed with HighZium Studio (formerly History D&C).[62]

In 2024, Kim starred in the tvN drama Queen of Tears as Hong Hae-in, a chaebol heiress, alongside Kim Soo-hyun as her husband.[63] The series was a success both domestically and internationally. It broke the record for the highest-rated tvN series, achieving a nationwide viewership rating of 24.850% for its finale[64] and remained in Netflix's Global Top 10 Non-English TV series rankings for 15 consecutive weeks from its initial release.[65] The show's success increased Kim's popularity, resulting in multiple brand deals.[66][67]

Public image

Kim received attention for her clear and precise pronunciation after starring in The Heirs, with some media outlets describing her as a "Diction Fairy".[68] Kim's aegyo scene in Fight for My Way attracted significant attention on social media and inspired a dubbing challenge.[69][70] According to media report in April 2024, Kim was the only actor to appear in works written by the "Four Great Kings" of Korean drama: Kim Eun-sook, Lim Sang-choon, Park Hae-young, and Park Ji-eun.[71] In 2024, she ranked third in Yahoo Taiwan's Top 10 Entertainment Figures and also placed third in Gallup Korea's Television Actor of the Year.[72][73]

Philanthropy

In November 2016, Kim participated in the "We Action" child protection campaign organized by the Korean Committee for UNICEF.[74] In February 2020, she donated ₩20 million to World Share, an international relief and development NGO, to support medical staff and patients at Keimyung University Dongsan Hospital in Daegu during the COVID-19 pandemic.[75] In June 2022, Kim volunteered to appear in Big Issue, a magazine supporting the housing vulnerable. She stated, "I learned that it was a magazine that helped the housing vulnerable become independent," and expressed her desire to participate after meeting one of its vendors.[76] In October 2024, she joined W Korea's "Love Your W" campaign to raise awareness about breast cancer.[77]

In 2014, Kim was selected to endorse Gowoonsesang Cosmetics' brand, Dr.G.[78] In 2015, she was selected to endorse the British sportswear brand Lonsdale for the Chinese market.[79] Since 2016, she has been called the "CF Queen," becoming the face of various brands not only in South Korea but also internationally.[80] In July 2016, she was selected to endorse KT Corporation's GiGA IoT Health service and became the model for Korea's first TV commercial using 360-degree VR technology.[81] In October 2016, she was selected as the first model for Starfield Hanam, a complex shopping center in South Korea.[82] Other major brand endorsers include Shinhan Card,[83]J.Estina [ko],[84]Kia Motors,[85]HiteJinro,[86]KGC,[87]CKD Pharm,[88] and Hanwa Insurance.[89]

In April 2024, she was selected to endorse Lotte Chilsung's soju brand, Cheoeumchurum.[90] In July 2024, she was selected as a global ambassador for LG Household & Health Care's luxury cosmetic brand, The Whoo.[91] In September 2024, Kim was selected as a brand ambassador for luxury brand Bulgari, making her the brand's first-ever Korean house ambassador.[92] In October 2024, she was selected to endorse the jewelry brand Stonehenge.[93] In November 2024, she was selected as the first Korean brand ambassador for the Italian luxury outerwear brand Duvetica [ja].[94]
