- The following obituary appeared in the Des Moines Register, Sec A, pf 11, col Sven Lekberg composer and professor emeritus of music at Simpson College in Indianola, died Wednesday at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. He was Born in Chicago to Swedish parents with music backgrounds - his father was a singer and his mother a pianist - Lekberg received his bachelor’s degree from Northwestern University and traveled to Paris, where he studied piano in the early ’s. He returned to the United States and accepted his first teaching position at Westmar College in LeMars, and later headed the piano department at Ohio University and was chairman of the music departments of Salina (Kan.) Wesleyan and Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill. He completed work on a master’s degree in composition from the Eastman School of Music and later studied at Columbia Seminary. In , he became chairman of the music department at Simpson, where he continued to compose - some 70 pieces by retirement - and lecture. He retired in after 29 years at the school and 25 years as head of the music department. Upon his retirement, when someone told him he could now do everything he wanted to do, he replied, “You don’t understand. All my life I’ve been doing what I wanted to do”. Immediately after retirement he devoted full time effort to composing and in was named outstanding creative musician by the Iowa Arts Council. Survivors include two daughters, Jan Bendetson of New York City and Barbara Tamerlis of Mamaroneck, N.Y.; two grandchildren, a niece, Joan Grimson of Newton, and a nephew. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Smith Chapel on the Simpson campus. The body was cremated.
